Okay..okay...I'm so excited right now that I have to share my story, even though I don't think I should.

I saw Gypsy last night on August 5th, for my 5th time and probably my last because I have to go back to Highschool soon.

Anyway, I dropped a bouqet of flowers off at the stage door before the show for Bernadette with a little note saying how great she was in the show and how I have so many wonderful memories.

So when the show was over, I'm waiting at the stage door and Bernadette's assistant told me that she'd be able to bring me two of those Matt Logan drawings, because I missed getting them at Broadway Barks. So, her assistant came over and asked me if I had gotten them yet, and I said no. She went inside and didn't come out until Bernadette did.

When her assistant had the chance, she came over to me and I was expecting to get the drawings so I was trying to hand her my money. She shook her head no and asked me to step over the barracades into the section that is blocked off for Bernadette to walk. I am so utterly confused by this so I stand there for around 30 seconds trying to figure out what's going on. Bernadette stops signing autographs and comes over to me and says something like, "This is for your generous contributions to Broadway Barks" (I'm not saying how much I donated) and she handed me a gift bag with a stuffed dog signed by her and Mary, a stuffed cow signed by her, and the "Rose" Matt Logan drawing signed "Dearest Megan, Thank you for your thoughtfulness for the animals! You're a dear. Love Always, Bernadette Peters"

I'm standing there speechless like an idiot and so much in shock that my friend says I was shaking. Her assistant took a picture of me, Bernadette, and my friend also. I was just so happy when this all happened, but I don't really remember what I said or what I did.

Bernadette is the greatest actress and one of the kindest people I have ever met. She really is the best and she made a fan's dream come true last night.

Wow. That is a very excellent story!! And how good for you that you contributed to Broadway Barks!

Speaking of which, since you contributed to the charity, do you know where you can make the donations? Or to who? I was thinking of making one in my dog Tasha's name (she died of cancer last year.) But I don't know where to donate to. How did you go about it? Should I try contacting Bernadette's publicist?

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

Yeah I think either her publicist or her assistant would be best. I gave the donation to her assistant.

LoL! I remember that. And Bernadette also changed a note during the Some People reprise. Towards the end of the reprise she says "But not Rose!" She sang "Rose" higher than normal. I really like the change. I think they also gave her a new hat during the show. This one has flowers on the sides of it.

You could send your donations to any one of the animal organizations/shelters that are linked on: www.officialbroadwaybarks.org

I know the CACC and ASPCA are esecially close to Bernadette's heart since that's where she got her dogs. You could also try calling the Official Broadway Barks number at (212) 840 0770 ext 477 ( although I don't know if that number is valid all year round...it should be though) OR you could hit the "comments" key on the website and just ask them where would be the best place to send a donation.

Also, what's wrong with donating to your local shelter or any local organizations? You could donate it in Bernadette's name if you really wanted to and I'm sure she'd appreciate that just as much as anyone donating to a NY shelter.

That story was amazing. I wish something like that would happen to me! YOu're very lucky to have something like that happen. I have a somewhat similar story, but that's for another time, and doesn't have to do with Gypsy hehe

Please don't anybody take this the wrong way...but when you donate something to a charity you really shoulnd't expect anything back if its out of the goodness of your heart.

I agree Bwaybaby...I really wanted to adopt an animal but I'm not allowed to yet because my parents won't let me. But I had to do something for these animals. Someone has asked me once before, what I thought a "minimum donation" was to get an autograph. It's not about getting her autograph, it's about helping the homeless animals and not just getting her attention.

Thanks, bwaybaby.

I would donate to the shelters here (in florida) but... I'm not nuts about the way they're run and I doubt the money would go towards anything good. I've had bad experiences giving money (however little it was because I don't have much of it) directly to places like animal shelters (I donated when I tried adopting a dog years and years ago) and found out what the money was being used for... and decided to never donate again.

So I haven't donated any money to anything in years. But since learning more about Broadway barks (which combines my two favorite things: love of theatre and love of animals) I was seriously considering donating money because I knew it would go towards a cause that does everything in its power to keep an animal from being euthanized. When you donate directly to the shelter... well, let's just say some of those people are not always 100% truthful about where your money goes.

At any rate, my dog died in February of this year, and we had to consider euthanization because of the nature of her illness and I just... I couldn't fathom it. I thought it the most awful thing I could think of to do to an animal who loves you and expects to go to sleep and wake up again. And because I'm moving away I can't adopt a new dog. But I'd love to help a cause that helps animals find homes and saves them from being put to sleep.

Maybe it sounds silly, but if I donated anything it would be in Tasha's (my dog's) name because it would be in Tasha's memory. Tasha was my little buddy. And no, I wouldn't want anything from Bernadette for donating money. My reasons for donating have nothing to do with her, although she's how I discovered Broadway Barks. (I thought I'd ask here because it's her charity.)

While I love Bernadette I wouldn't donate any money to any cause for the sole purpose of getting an autograph and recognition. That's just not me. Besides, it IS possible to want to do something good and not want anything in return.

And my apologies if it sounded as if I was asking because I wanted to try for extra attention. I assure you, that was not my reasoning. But now that I know there's an actual Broadway Barks site I'll go to that and look up the info. Thanks.

The majority, if not all of the money donated to Broadway Barks this year went to the 23 shelters involved with Broadway Barks( they are linked on the site). I'm not sure but some of the money may have gone to operational costs of Broadway Barks but like I said its all pretty much divided amoungst those 23 shealters.

PS-

I NEVER said nor implied that you wanted any sort of recognition. And I don't think that. You did however ask where you could donate money and I was merely responding. Everything else stated was my own personal opinions about the matter at hand.

Actually ALL of the money collected in the name of Broadway Barks 5 went to the shelters. The operating costs of putting on Broadway Barks is provided by sponsors.

UCFGuardgirl, if you'd like to help a shelter but can't take an animal home and you worry about where the money's going, donate dog or cat food to a shelter. A bag or a few cans a week would help a lot and you'd know where it's going. Or support spay and neuter efforts.
[ I recently stopped after five years sending monthly pledges to a children's hospital charity because they kept sending trinkets and other junk to me, and I wrote back, 'if you've money to waste on this junk, you don't need my little donations.']

I lost my beloved bud, a Golden, about four years ago. He had cancer and his last night he was in so much pain, I can still hear his cries in my head and it hurts even after all this time to think about it. My heart was broken, but I have to say it was a relief when he was put to sleep because he was hurting so much. As hard as it was to do, I only regret I didn't do it sooner.

Thanks to Ms. Peters and Broadway Barks 5, I've just adopted a dog from a shelter here in Virginia (I'm a native Floridian tho, UCFGuardgirl). He's lovely...although he and the cat have issues.

I really admire Ms. Peters and Mary Tyler Moore's efforts toward no-kill shelters, which is not the case here either. The carnage numbers are devastating.

I was in NYC this weekend for my birthday (saw "Gypsy" Saturday and Monday), and on the street I saw this homeless-looking man pull two cats out of an insulated bag. He feed them, but he was carrying them stuffed into this picnic-type bag. It was horrifying. But what could I do?

Point is: You can't save them all, but do what you can. I rescued a dog that had been hit by a car last fall, got him to a vet and thru the SPCA, found the owner. Do what you can do.

Megan, I saw you but I didn't realize that was you! I was standing right next to her car! She was so sweet I was so thrilled that I finally got to meet her on Tuesday and Wednesday! It was the greatest moments of my life! I just got home now and I think I love Bernadette even more now.
